The Center for Amputee Rehabilitation

Each year, more than 130,000 individuals in the United States undergo the amputation of a limb and face a challenging period of physical recovery. More than that, they must deal with a full range of complex psychological, emotional and social issues.

Kessler's team of amputee rehabilitation specialists understands this and works closely with each patient to help restore strength and confidence, regain function and mobility, and build an independent and rewarding life.

Our Approach

Studies show that where an individual goes for treatment can make all the difference in his or her recovery. Kessler, a specialized rehabilitation hospital, combines advanced medical, nursing and therapy care with innovative prosthetic technology to help individuals optimize life ahead. Our comprehensive approach to amputee rehabilitation focuses on the post-surgical, prosthetic and outpatient/reintegration phases to:

  • address proper wound care and limb management
  • increase an individual's strength, flexibility, coordination and endurance, and decrease pain
  • provide the expert fitting and custom-manufacture of a prosthesis to meet personal lifestyle needs
  • train individuals to use their prosthesis with confidence and comfort, and avoid complications

In fact, Kessler offers an unparalleled continuum of care – inpatient through outpatient – to enhance each patient's recovery, enabling individuals to build on the strengths and skills they have acquired.

Kessler Amputee Rehabilitation Clinic

Ongoing support is available to clients through our Amputee Rehabilitation Clinic. Here a team of clinicians – including a physiatrist, prosthetist, physical therapist and podorthotist – evaluate and monitor patients' progress. They quickly and effectively address any needs, problems or concerns that may arise, as well as make adjustments to current devices, introduce advances in prosthetic design and offer guidance to meet changing lifestyle needs.

Specialized Services

We recognize the unique needs of our patients and offer many specialized services to meet them, including vocational counseling, advanced wheelchair and seating options and the introduction to assistive devices and technologies. Our renowned Driver Rehabilitation Program helps individuals to develop the skills necessary to operate a vehicle safely, as well as to make recommendations for vehicle modifications.

Kessler's Peer Visitor Program, developed in cooperation with the Amputee Coalition of America, brings together patients and families with specially trained and certified amputee volunteers for peer-to-peer mentoring. In addition, Kessler offers a monthly Amputee Support Group, which gives amputees and their families the opportunity to share information, discuss common problems and learn from the experiences of others.

Our Outcomes

Studies show that patients treated at an acute rehabilitation hospital like Kessler have a higher level of functional independence and are more likely to be discharged home than those treated in other care settings. On average, Kessler patients have greater improvement during their stay and a higher level of functional independence upon discharge, based on national benchmarks that measure criteria such as locomotion and activities of daily living.
