Yekyung Kong, M.D.
Dr. Yekyung Kong specializes in stroke, spinal cord injury and musculoskeletal/orthopedic rehabilitation, as well as the treatment of individuals with neurological disorders, gait dysfunction and Guillain-Barré syndrome. She also has expertise in pain management, spasticity management, the therapeutic use of orthoses (races) and acupuncture.
After graduating from a seven-year accelerated BS/MD program at the Sophie Davis School of Bio-Medical Education at the City University of New York, Dr. Kong received her medical degree from New York Medical College. She went on to complete a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School.
Dr. Kong is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and holds subspecialty certification in spinal cord injury medicine and pain management. She was also certified as an acupuncturist after completing her training at the University of California at Los Angeles.
Dr. Kong joined the Kessler Institute in 1995 as a staff physiatrist. She currently serves as Director of Outpatient Stroke Services, focusing on the treatment and rehabilitation of stroke patients. She manages the Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Center and the Brace/Orthotic Center at the Kessler’s West Orange campus and also provides care to individuals with a wide range of neurological and orthopedic conditions.
Dr. Kong has written numerous articles, publications, and abstracts on a variety of topics, including the rehabilitation of patients infected with HIV, peripheral neuropathy in burn patients, the efficacy of prophylactic antibiotic treatment upon urinary catheter removal, and the cost-effectiveness of screening X-rays before patients enter an acute rehabilitation program. She has also appeared on several news broadcasts as an expert in the field of stroke rehabilitation.
