Kessler Patient Eric LeGrand Honored at 2012 ESPY Awards
West Orange, NJ - Eric LeGrand, the former Rutgers University football player who suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury in a 2010 game against Army, was presented with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at this year's ESPY ceremony in Los Angeles.
The award, given to someone in sports who has overcome great obstacles through perseverance and determination, is named for Jim Valvano, a highly respected North Carolina State coach who gave an emotional acceptance speech at the 1993 ESPYs that included his famous words ''Don't Give Up . . . Don't Ever Give Up!''
In his acceptance speech, LeGrand said "I'm going out there to inspire other people, to [tell them to] live to the best of your abilities, don't take anything for granted, because in one second, it can be all thrown away. Like Jimmy V always said, 'Don't give up, don't ever give up.' You can best believe I will never give up and I will rise from this chair."
